Commissions, Dedications and Awards

Concerto for violin and orchestra is dedicated to the composer's father Philipp Tüür and was commissioned by the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra and was premiered on September 16, 1999 at the Alte Oper, Frankfurt, Germany by Isabelle van Keulen:violin & the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Hugh Wolff. Aditus is dedicated to the memory of Lepo Sumera (1950-2000) and was commissioned by the Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz and was premiered on December 1, 2000 at the Christuskirche, Mainz, Germany by the Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz conducted by Ralf Otto. Exodus is dedicated to the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and Paavo Järvi and was commissioned by the John Feeny Charitable Trust and was premiered on October 26, 1999 at Symphony Hall, Birmingham, UK by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra conducted by Paavo Järvi.

The CD booklet notes contain an essay in German (Wellenformen) by Walter-Wolfgang Sparrer with a biographical overview of Erkki-Sven Tüür and commentary on the works contained on the present disc, a French language translation (Formes d'ondes) of the essay by Dominique Lebeau and an interview (Levels of Energy) in English with Erkki-Sven Tüür by Steve Lake. Also 8 black and white photographs primarily from the recording and rehearsal sessions with Isabelle van Keulen, Paavo Järvi and Erkki-Sven Tüür are included. These are by photographers Anu Tammemägi, Adrian Burrows, Charlotte Oswald and one unidentified from a private collection.

ECM records have recently (February 2004) revised their website and there is a new disc information page for the Exodus release.

The programme note for the performance of the Erkki-Sven Tüür Violin Concerto at the August 1, 2003 Proms concert which was also the occasion of the UK release of this CD is available at the BBC Proms site.
